I went into labor before a scheduled c-section on 1-1-08, as soon as I got to the hospital
they took me to Labor and Delivery, I was dilated to a seven with a bulging bag. The nurse
left to call the a doctor because there was no one there, while the nurse was gone, I had a
contraction that broke my water and the placenta ruptured my uterus and caused the
umbilical cord to prolapse, which means it basically came out of the cervix and it cut off
Joshua's air supply. At this time there was still no doctor available so the nursing staff did
what they could to relieve tension off the cord until they could get us into surgery; before we
were taken into OR, they lost Joshua's heartbeat and could not pick it up. The Doctor
arrived and he immediately wheeled me back to surgery. Before we started the surgery he
told me he was sorry but the outcome didn't look good, that they didn't think the baby was
going to make it. When we both came out of surgery and I was out of recovery, I was told
life flight was waiting to take Joshua to Herman, the staff and everyone was not very
hopeful... Little did I know, while all of this was taking place, prayers were being heard,
miracles were happening and life was spoke into my lifeless child. My mother took heed to
the voice of God and refused to believe the negative diagnosis "man" had given Joshua.
The Spirit of the Lord spoke to her and she began to prophecy just as Ezekiel did to the dry
bones. "You shall live and not die!" My mother, Pastor Mary of Gleaner Church, was
called to the back to say goodbye to her grandson, that there was no hope unless a miracle
occurred. The second floor walls of the hospital began to shake and as my family watched
my lifeless son through the window something occurred. A dedicated nurse stood over
Joshua manually pumping air into his lungs as my mother stood by praying. Joshua began
breathing on his own. God had another plan. Life light was on the way and they needed
to get Joshua stable and asked my mother to leave the room. The hallways were
bombarded with prayers of life, while the walls echoed from the voices of faith crying out to
save my child. The attending nurse followed these voices at full force looking for my
mother. The Doctor wanted the "praying grandmother" back in the room to pray for Joshua
until life light arrived. He said while she prayed things changed for Joshua positively.
Joshua pulled through and after his evaluation at the NICU at Herman we were told Joshua
had Hypoxic Isheimac Encepalapothy, he suffered mild to severe brain damage on the basil
ganglia part of the brain, the part that controlled his voluntary-involuntary movements, fine
and gross motor skills, they told us that he would have Cerebral Palsy and
vision/blindness problems, they weren't hopeful. Because of the severity of the situation
my child and I were at separate hospitals. My parents stood in for me and when the doctors
explained to my Dad, Pastor Simon, what had occurred and what the possible outcome
would be, my Dad said to the doctor that he would not deny his diagnosis but he was a man
of faith and to get ready to see a miracle for Joshua. The Doctor agreed that there is power
in prayer.
Joshua was there at Herman NICU for six almost seven weeks, and by the time he was
gone the doctors and nurses were amazed, because of damage to the brain Joshua lost all
ability to suck and swallow and his gag reflex was gone, he had a gastro feeding tube
placed in February of 2008 and on December 11, 2008 he had that removed and all feedings
are now by mouth. In June of 2008 when Josh had another, the third and final, follow up
MRI and scan and EEG, they saw no evidence of brain damage and his neurologist told us
to expect a full recovery. At Joshua's 12 month evaluation he trended to a typical one year
old, when just 2 months prior he was 6 months behind developmentally. At 14 months
Joshua took his first step and hasn't stopped running since. At 19 months he said his first
sentence and hasn't stopped talking since, his language development is further developed
than his 4 year old sister who is on target. He has been discharged from his therapy
program and his high risk doctor. When he goes for his checkups his doctors tell us that
they have never seen anyone with his diagnosis and amount of brain damage make a
recovery like his, and that Joshua is a miracle.
